 Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States and as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America.
Some History:
Columbus celebrations commemorate the Genoese explorer's first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Columbus, on commission by the Spanish monarchy, was hoping to find a new naval route to India and the other nations of the East, but instead found the American continent which was virtually unknown to Europeans at the time. Columbus's sailor Rodrigo de Triana was the first on the voyage to spot land in the New World; he found the island the natives called Guanahani at approximately 2:00 AM on October 12, 1492. The exact location of this island is unknown, though it was somewhere in the Bahamas. Columbus's expedition launched the first large-scale European colonization of the Americas.
The first Columbus Day celebration was held in 1792, when New York City celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World.

 "Che appiccicoso!" Sara said as merlot grapes squished between her toes. The annual Italian Festival in Sonoma's Sebastiani Winery proved to be a hit with the kids. Besides the grape stomping, children chased each other around enormous oak barrels with wood carvings depicting the Harvest Calendar and The Last Supper. In traditional Italian style, accordianists kept our feet tapping while some adults sipped wine and everyone nibbled on pizza or pasta.
Sebastiani Winery has a rich history whose founder came from Farneta, Italy in 1874. It's highly worth a visit.

 More than 400,000 revelers are expected at San Francisco's 140th ANNUAL ITALIAN HERITAGE PARADE on Sunday, October 12, 2008, as the City's oldest civic event and the nation's oldest Italian-American parade and community celebration winds its way from Fisherman's Wharf to North Beach. A San Francisco institution since it was established in 1868, the 2008 Parade is promising to be bigger, better and more colorful than ever.
The Parade action begins at 12:30 pm at the foot of Jefferson and Stockton Streets in Fisherman's Wharf, proceeds south through North Beach on Columbus Avenue, and ends in Washington Square in front of Sts. Peter and Paul Church.
