Buon Ferragosto! Print E-mail
Friday, 15 August 2008

Ferragosto is an Italian holiday celebrated on August 15. Originally, it was related to a celebration of the middle of the summer and the end of the hard labour in the fields. In time, the Roman Catholicism adopted this date as a Holy Day of Obligation to commemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—the real physical elevation of her sinless soul and incorrupt body into Heaven.

Before the Roman Catholic Church came into existence, however, this holiday was celebrated in the Roman Empire to honor the gods—in particular Diana—and the cycle of fertility and ripening. In fact, the present Italian name of the holiday derives from its original Latin name, Feriae Augusti (Fairs of the Emperor Augustus).
Almost the entire month of August was taken as holiday and leisure time in Italy in honor of this feast day.

Italian movie at San Rafael Movie Theater Print E-mail

Marcello Mastroianni stars in director Pietro Germi's wickedly funny classic as a decadent Sicilian aristocrat who is bored with life, and much more so with his wife (Daniela Rocca). Ferdinando's roving eye settles on his beautiful 16-year-old cousin (Stefania Sandrelli), and coveting her purity and innocence, he sets out to change spouses. Italian law won't allow a divorce, but our amoral protagonist observes that authorities are lenient toward husbands who kill unfaithful wives in matters of "honor." And so he decides his first step is to find his wife a lover. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, this terrifically entertaining satire also earned a "Best Actor" Oscar nomination for Mastroianni, and it remained one of his greatest roles. Shown in a new 35mm print. In Italian with English subtitles. With Leopoldo Trieste. Writers: Ennio De Concini, Pietro Germi, Alfredo Giannetti. Director: Pietro Germi. (Italy 1961) 105 min.

From August 12 to August 14 - Show time
