The successful Rosetta Stone (software) is free online via the Mill Valley Marin Library.

Mill Valley Public Library is pleased to provide online access to Rosetta Stone language learning library. Rosetta Stone's interactive, multimedia, self-paced tutorials are available to any Mill Valley resident with a valid Library card.
 
Use Rosetta Stone in the Library or from your home, office, or school.

This software is pretty pricey, and also well developed. Based on prices below, it's worth it to use the free version at the library! It is currently only available to Mill Valley residents, which is a shame, but if we find out about broader access we'll post here.
