Roberto Rossellini CentenaryWhere: San Rafael Film Center When: Aug. 4, 8, 9, 10 See marin italian events calendar This year marks the 100th birthday of Italian master Roberto Rossellini. In celebration the San Rafael Film Center presents a beautifully restored print of one of his most celebratory films, as well as a strange and wonderful short film tribute made by his daughter Isabella in collaboration with Canadian director Guy Maddin. The filmmaker mostly closely associated with Italian Neorealism, Roberto Rossellini was also the most straightforward and uncompromising in his depiction of reality.
San Rafael Film Center, which Rossellini directed just five years
after his postwar masterpiece Roma Citta Aperta' Open City, tells the story of the medieval
saint in simple and joyous vignettes. The Italian title is Francesco, giullare
di Dio (Francis, God’s Jester), and for a film about faith it is
less concerned with God than with humility, folly, compassion and happiness.
Co-written by Federico Fellini and cast with real monks, it
portrays the quest for spiritual enlightenment in terms as much Buddhist as
Christian. In Italian with English subtitles. (Italy 1950) 8.0/10 rating on IMDB! San Rafael Film Center
